Lonely Planet giving away free iPhone guides in honor of Eyjafjallajökull messing with Europe

Filed under: App Store Did Eyjafjallajökull mess your week up? The answer is probably “no” if you’re asking who Eyjafjallajökull is. For those of us who did have our week interrupted by that big exploding volcano in Iceland, Lonely Planet is offering thirteen of its City Guides for free in the App Store (and okay, they’re free to all, no proof of volcano-interruption required). The aptly-named “Volcano Relief Sale” is being held in hopes of helping travelers stuck in unfamiliar places find “access to practical information as well as suggestions on what to do whilst stranded,” according to Tom Hall, Lonely Planet Travel Editor.

Piper Jaffray estimates a big boost in Mac sales

MacMan | April 19, 2010 | 0 Comments

Filed under: Apple Financial In a report issued today ( cited by Apple 2.0 and SAI ), Piper Jaffray’s leading light on all things AAPL gazed into his crystal ball and served up some notes on NPD retail sales data. Gene Munster’s numbers are especially interesting as we head into tomorrow’s earnings report. The lowdown: Munster is looking for a Mac sales number between 2.8 and 2.9 million machines, based off of NPD’s retail data showing a 25% year over year boost in Mac sales for the quarter. He’s also looking for iPod sales between 9 and 10 million, and 7.5 million iPhone sales. What’s weird is that NPD data showed Mac sales up 39% for January and February …

Snow Leopard quirk prevents opening groups of recently downloaded files

Filed under: Snow Leopard Reports of an odd bug affecting downloaded files in Snow Leopard have been circulating Apple’s discussion boards recently. As reported by TidBITS , the issue appears to be affecting all computers running Snow Leopard. While different users have reported varying symptoms and differing circumstances, it essentially boils down to this: if you download a group of files, and then attempt to open the entire group of files at once (rather than opening each file individually), chances are either some or all of the selected files will not open. My initial response to this was that it could possibly be one of those “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” ordeals. We have already seen some indications that Apple is working on enhanced security and virus protection in Snow Leopard , so it stands to reason that the operating system may be simply trying to prevent what it thinks is malicious activity by imposing restrictions on what you can and can’t do with a newly downloaded file.

Pocket Universe ups the astronomy app ante

Filed under: iPhone , App Store , iPod touch , App Review When the fireworks stop and the smoke clears , it would be a great weekend to look at our beautiful summer skies. Pocket Universe [App Store] is a US$2.99 app that has been updated to make star finding easier for those that have a new iPhone 3GS. The app uses the position sensors and the compass to orient your phone to match the real sky. As you turn or tilt the phone, the sky map changes to give you a very accurate picture of where you are pointing, with lots of labels and links to more information. This is one of the first examples of an augmented reality app to hit the platform since the introduction of the 3GS. If you have an older iPhone or iPod touch running OS 3.0, you can tilt the phone to match where the real sky is, but you’ll have to manually set the direction you’re facing
