iPad killer apps: The TUAW consensus

Posted by on April 20, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: iPad Killer apps define a platform. They spark the insight as to why a particular device is right for you, allowing you to make the connection between its purchase and how it will work in your life. Here at TUAW, we decided to brainstorm through the iPad apps that we’ve used, and to focus in on what we consider to be the iPad’s killer items. These are items that really bring the iPad to life, highlighting it as a device and showcasing its features beyond what you could normally get on an iPhone, iPod touch, or even on a competitively priced netbook. Here are our choices for those special stand-out apps. TUAW iPad killer apps: The TUAW consensus originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 20 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. Filed under: Steve Jobs , Apple It’s February 24, 2010, which means that Steve Jobs has his 55th birthday today. Not many people get to start up a company and then develop several completely new markets during their lives. Steve Jobs has been intimately involved with popularizing a number of devices during his lifetime: the personal computer (Apple II and Mac), the MP3 player (iPod), the smartphone (iPhone), and now the media tablet (iPad). All of the Apple fans here at TUAW wish Steve a happy birthday and many more years of Thinking Different. iTunes LP now available for Apple TV customers

Posted by on November 6, 2009 in Apple news

Filed under: iTS , Multimedia , iTunes , Apple TV A few of us here at TUAW received an email from Apple this morning stating that Apple TV-compatible versions of previous iTunes LP purchases are available for download. You’ll remember that LP purchases made before the Apple TV 3.0 release would need a second download to work with the Apple TV. Apple is now offering those downloads. The email from Apple is very straight-forward: “With the latest versions of iTunes (9.0.2) and Apple TV software (3.0), you can now use iTunes LP on your Apple TV

We wanted to ask you what exactly you use your Mac mini for, so we came up with this in-depth poll. There are several choices, so let us know how you use your Mac mini. If your favorite use for a Mac mini isn’t listed in the poll, you can also leave a comment below and tell us how you use your mini. NaNoWriMo writers: Storyist has some hot deals for you, too

Posted by on October 23, 2009 in Apple news

Filed under: Software , Odds and ends , Deals In my continuing campaign to get as many Apple fans out there as possible to take part in National Novel Writing Month , I’m always looking for deals on writing software. Earlier in the week, I reported on a deal that Scrivener is providing for NaNoWriMo participants. Well, not to be left out of the fun, Storyist Software also has some deals set up for would-be novelists. If you’re in the Bay Area, you might want to take part in NaNoWriMo’s Night of Writing Dangerously on Sunday, November 22, 2009 from 5 to 11 PM in the Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchant’s Exchange Building in San Francisco. Every writer who participates in this fundraising event gets a free copy of Storyist 2 from Storyist Software, and two top fundraisers for the event will each receive an Amazon Kindle and a $50 gift card from Storyist. Storyist always provides a 30-day free trial version of their namesake software, but this time they’ll give you a temporary license that lasts through the first week of December if you contact the company from their NaNoWriMo page .

Google Chrome released for Mac

Posted by on October 23, 2009 in Apple news

Filed under: Software , Internet , Internet Tools Google has released an official developer preview of Google Chrome for the Mac. Rather than digging through nightly development builds, you can download the developer preview of the WebKit-based browser at Google’s official webpage . Chrome sports several features similar to Safari 4 in Snow Leopard, such as sandboxing – each tab runs as its own process, so if one crashes, it doesn’t bring down the whole browser.
