Macworld.com – The Onion News Network, the rudest “cable news” channel around, is breaking new ground with a paid download, and it’s using the iTunes Store to try it out.
View PostRogue Amoeba on background audio and Airfoil Speakers Touch
Filed under: SDK Dan Wineman, a developer with Rogue Amoeba, has posted an interesting article on the company blog . I’m a big fan of developers who can explain things clearly to non-developers without sounding condescending, and Dan does a great job covering how the limited version of multitasking available in iOS 4 poses a problem for Airfoil Speakers Touch . For those who aren’t familiar with Airfoil , it is Rogue Amoeba’s program for Windows and Mac which allows you to send audio to AirPort Express units, Apple TVs, and iOS devices. Previously it was of limited use for iPhone and iPod touch owners because you had to keep the app running in the foreground for the audio to play.
View PostMail.app in 10.6.4 pastes screenshots as TIFF
Filed under: OS Out of some behind-the-scenes frustration on the TUAW team email list, we seem to have discovered a quirk in Mac OS X 10.6.4. Using the built-in screenshot tools, you can copy a screenshot to the clipboard using Command + Control + Shift + 3 (or 4, for the crosshairs screenshot). From there you can paste into Preview or Mail or any other application which can take images from the clipboard.
Mac 101: Moving files from your old PC to your new Mac
Filed under: Switchers A friend asked how to get her music, photos, and documents from her PC to her new Mac. There was actually a “Get a Mac” ad about this called Off The Air . In the commercial, the services was described as being free. I called Apple and was told that yes this is still available and free — but I think the person I spoke to was wrong. Apple’s “Why Mac?” FAQ says that this is now part of the One to One service, which is $99 and only available when you buy a new Mac. Apple also has an article entitled Switch 101: Migrate Your Files or Your Windows System which is also designed to help.
AT&T: iPhone 3G out of stock; considers modifying new iPad 3G deal …
AT&T removed it because Apple finally said, “You know what… you haven’t been telling us the truth about being able to provide our users with the experience we want them to have on your network. We’ll be taking our business elsewhere …
iPad app prototype is a wicked big remote for Comcast
Filed under: iPad Here’s an interesting demo video from Comcast that features an iPad as a remote control with a few extras. In the demo, Comcast’s Brian Roberts shows how to use the app to search for programming (both TV and On Demand), change channels and even program the Comcast DVR. Pretty neat. Once paired with your cable box, simply browse the TV schedule or the On Demand options. To jump to a show, simply tap its name and presto! The cable box changes channels. Likewise, you can tap an On Demand feature to start it playing
iPads on the virtual flight deck
Filed under: iPad It’s no secret that the iPad is popular with pilots. TUAW has provided coverage of pilot kneeboards for holding iPads in the cockpit , many iPhone apps for pilots that are now making their way to the big(ger) screen, and we’ve heard from commenters who fly for a living that they think the iPad may be the greatest thing to appear in the cockpit since Charlton Heston . One British firm is now starting to use iPads as electronic flight bags, although not on “real” aircraft. The company, Virtual Aviation , operates Airbus and Boeing full-motion flight simulators at London Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
Manage your DNS settings for faster web browsing
Filed under: Internet Tools In the Network Settings pane of your System Preferences, you may have noticed that you can manually set the DNS servers your connection will use. There are a few reasons for doing this, namely speeding up the time it takes to look up any given website, but also to bypass some annoyances in your ISP’s (or IT department’s) default name server. Such annoyances could include domain blocking, censorship and other things you may or may not know are even happening. For the most part, though, you’d change your DNS settings to make sure you were using the fastest possible server from your current location. Read on to find out how! Hands-on with Elgato EyeTV Hybrid and EyeTV app for iPhone
Filed under: Reviews Elgato Systems has been in the business of turning Macs into TVs for quite a while now. The company’s most powerful USB digital TV tuner, the EyeTV Hybrid (US$149.95), is an amazing little dongle that comes equipped with EyeTV 3 tuner / recorder software for Mac. The EyeTV Hybrid has gone through a few iterations, many of which we’ve previously reviewed on TUAW . I’m not much of a TV viewer; my tastes tend to run towards The Food Network and Fringe , so I don’t spend hours sitting in my La-Z-Boy recliner flipping the remote. After using the EyeTV Hybrid and experimenting with the US$4.99 EyeTV app for iPhone , I was considering changing my mind. Most content available on TV is still dreck , but EyeTV made it incredibly simple to watch and record on my Mac, and to send that content to my iPhone when I’m not near the office
CBS will roll out HTML5 compliant portal for iPad
Filed under: iPad Watching TV on an iPad is a joy. Prop it up, plug in some speakers, turn it on its side and sit back. You can carry it with you as you move about and the epic battery life permits episode after episode. The only drawback right now is the lack of content (I’m looking at you, Hulu). Fortunately, networks like CBS are keen to get on board.
