Apple has just brought their Filemaker database software to iOS devices for the very first time, and while FileMaker Go isn’t going to replace your Mac when it comes to database creation, it is a slick way to access Filemaker databases on the go. Filemaker Go allows users to update and modify existing databases on their

Flowchart Predicts Apple Fan Reactions over iPhone 4 Presser (We’re All Mactards)

Retrevo created this handy flowchart predicting consumer reactions following Apple’s press conference. Of the four types of people — two are Apple fans in varying degrees, one is a hater and the fourth doesn’t really care about tech — any one who rates themselves a fan (Campin-Tosh) won’t change their opinion one iota, even if Steve

Who wants an iPad? Almost everyone!

Filed under: iPad My wife and I are currently cruising the Baltic aboard the Disney Magic . Of course, two things we couldn’t leave at home were our iPhones and iPads. One thing we found immediately was that many of the crew members and passengers on the Magic had never seen an iPad, and they were fascinated with the device. As an example, Burak, the manager of one of the three restaurants on the ship, had me demo the iPad to his wife. She is on the ship for a few weeks as a guest of the cruise line, and he needed her to “approve” his planned purchase of an iPad. After a short demo of Photos, a few games, and iWork, Burak’s wife gave his purchase the thumbs-up. I can now count the restaurant manager as a good friend

Marking out iPhone app icons on the iPad

Filed under: iPad David Frampton has an interesting idea for how to display non-universal iPhone apps on the iPad : put a black border around them , much like how iPhone apps will display if they are not scaled-up. I think it’s a brilliant idea. It makes them distinguishable, but at the same time seems not to obvious.

A tale of two mediums: Despite the iPad, traditional books aren’t going anywhere.

Filed under: iPad It was the newest of technologies, it was the oldest of technologies. A while back I wrote an opinion piece on my lament over Penguin Books’ John Makinson trying to reinvent books on the iPad. In response to the article, I received emails that ranged from people calling me a Luddite to readers asking me to petition Penguin to keep books from becoming audio, video, and streaming monstrosities. What people on both sides of the debate misunderstood was that I am not against ebooks. I’m against turning an ebook into a multimedia experience that detracts from the work of literature

Eight ways the iPad pwns the iPhone

Filed under: iPad When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad in January, he talked about defining its niche. He explained that the iPad sits somewhere between an iPhone and a laptop and is meant for the same kind of use that is currently served by netbooks. Despite that, we have been exposed to a lot of buzz about the iPad being nothing more than an oversized iPod touch. And although the hardware is, essentially, just that — a bigger version of the touch, running the same apps from the same App Store — there’s more to it than that simplified explanation. Yesterday, TUAW explored eight use cases wherein the iPhone provides a better solution than the iPad , examining the iPhone-specific niche and situations where the iPhone took first place in usability. Today, we’re turning that comparison on its head
