GOAL! EyeTV filters out the vuvuzelas at the World Cup
Filed under: Software Just in time for the US to advance to the round of 16 in the World Cup (sorry, Algeria), Elgato offers a special edition of its EyeTV software that does what just about everybody (who’s watching the World Cup ) wants: filter out those horrible plastic horns while you’re watching the games live through your EyeTV hardware. [If you're one of the people who actually went and downloaded an iPhone app to simulate the dang noise -- you know who you are -- knock it off. -Ed.] You can call me culturally insensitive, but it’s a plain fact that the vuvuzelas create that constant, loud buzz behind the games, drowning out everything else like a massive swarm of angry bees. The EyeTV filter can be quickly switched off from a contextual menu in EyeTV. The constant drone is at a pretty narrow frequency that you can ” duck ” (notch filter) easily, and I assume that’s what this edition of EyeTV is doing

iPhone grabs 20%+ smartphone market share in the land of Nokia
Finland is the home of mobile phone giant Nokia, but that’s not keeping Apple from eating away at the Finnish market for smartphones. Apple now has over 20% of the Finnish smartphone market. The numbers were disclosed on Sunday by Finnish carrier TeliaSonera, and published by YLE , the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Although the content of the Google-translated YLE post is subject to interpretation, the gist appears to be that worldwide cell phone market leader Nokia (with about a 33% share of the total world market) is losing share more quickly in the smartphone sector
iPhone sync problems after iTunes update traced to leftover plugin
Filed under: Troubleshooting , iPhone In case you are on the road to an iOS 4 update (and be careful ), you might want to double check your work. Remember, first you have to update iTunes to 9.2, which will then allow you to download the iOS 4 update. After I updated iTunes, I went in to make some changes to what I had synced and take off some podcasts that I don’t listen to and video I don’t really watch. After making changes and clicking apply, I got this error: “iPhone cannot be synced. A duplicate filename was specified.” A bit of searching found other people having this issue, and the clear explanation at Apple Toolbox saved the day. As it turns out, the culprit is iToner from Ambrosia Software. I used it once a long time ago, and then I deleted the application without using my handy dandy AppZapper .
What really happened with Wi-Fi on the iPhone 4
Filed under: Steve Jobs WWDC is wrapping up here in San Francisco today, and after a week of having most of the best Apple developers in the world all in one place, we’re hearing some speculation and solutions for what happened to Steve Jobs on stage Monday . He had Wi-Fi issues while accessing the New York Times website during a demo with iPhone 4 , and of course it led to the awkward pause where he asked the over 500 Wi-Fi users in the room to please unplug their computers and stop liveblogging (of course, not everybody complied). But were those users the problem? NPR cornered Glenn Fleishman for an explanation, and he says while that many Wi-Fi users might not have caused problems, many of the people in the room were using MiFis , the personal wireless network devices that aren’t necessarily designed to be used so closely together. It wasn’t a bandwidth problem then, Fleishman suggests, but an interference problem, with local Wi-Fi likely giving way to the vast noise from other devices.
Skype quietly delays charges for iPhone app calling
Filed under: iPhone According to the fine print on the Skype iPhone app, free Skype to Skype calls will last all the way until the end of 2010. Yesterday, the date was given as the end of August, but it looks like we’ve all gotten an extension on Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G. People were rather agitated about Skype deciding to charge for what had been free calls, but were pleased that the updated app finally supported calls over the 3G network. Now the prospect of payment has at least been delayed, possibly because of the outcry from users — comments on the changes haven’t been pretty. The Skype folks haven’t explained the change, or the reason for the charges to begin with. We’ll stay tuned, and keep our ears open for why Skype might have delayed the planned charges. Survey: iPad customer satisfaction is at 91%
Filed under: iPad A pair of surveys from ChangeWave reinforce what we’ve suspected for the last month: People like the iPad a lot, and that’s not about to change. The first survey of a whopping 153 people (I saw more in the supermarket this morning) found that 74% said they are “very satisfied” with their iPads, and another 17% are “somewhat satisfied.” How many disliked the iPad? A full 2% claimed to be “unsatisfied.” Aww. In another survey, ChangeWave asked 3,174 potential customers if they plan to buy iPads. Of that group, 7% of respondents said they are “very likely” to buy an iPad. Another 13 percent are “somewhat likely.” That first number has risen since ChangeWave started conducting these surveys.
Found Footage: Apple pulls iSlam Muhammad app
Filed under: Found Footage In what is sure to raise a ruckus, comedian / filmmaker / app developer Emery Emery recorded a phone call with an Apple App Store rep when his iSlam Muhammad app was pulled from the App Store after one day. The highly entertaining conversation in its entirety can be heard by watching the “video” above. iSlam Muhammad apparently depicted images of the prophet Muhammad (forbidden by Islam) and outlined disturbing passages from the Qur’an.
Simplify Media, a Mac favorite, bought by Google
Filed under: Multimedia We were wondering what happened to Simplify Media , the well-regarded software that offers your Mac ubiquitous access to your DRM-free music and photos via iTunes, an iPhone or iPod touch. In March, we reported that the company was “heading in a different direction,” which turned out to be a sale to Google. The Simplify Media app was removed from the app store, and the ability to share your iTunes library with others was removed. The sale was just announced this morning at the Google I/O conference. Google intends to use the product on Android Phones, and it will be a component part of an iTunes-type of service that’s in development
