Filed under: TUAW Business , Podcasts As per tradition, we’ll be digitally gathering this evening for the Talkcast . Hosting tonight will be handled by me, unofficial Mistress of the unofficial Aftershow. This week’s topics include the iPhone 4 preorder snafu-age, the 10.6.4 system update, the impending iOS 4 release, and iPad/Mac security. We’ll get things underway at 4pm Hawaiian time, which is 7pm Pacific and 10pm Eastern. Of course, we’ll also talk about whatever your heart desires too. None of this works without you. Yes, you! Without our regular readers and listeners, it’s just TUAW bloggers talking to themselves

Is AT&T moving up your iPhone upgrade date?

Posted by on June 6, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: iPhone In anticipation of a new iPhone coming out soon , I visited my online AT&T account information last week to see when I’d be available for an upgrade. As of last Wednesday, the upgrade page showed that I’d be available for a new phone upgrade on 9/21/2010. This morning we received a tip from TUAW reader Omar, who noted that his date had been moved up from late October of 2010 to “discounted equipment pricing when you sign a new 2-year commitment.” That intrigued me, so I decided to check for myself. Sure enough, the upgrade page for my AT&T account now shows the information seen above (account and phone number information deleted to protect the blogger). While we’re not sure that this offer has been extended to all iPhone 3GS owners on AT&T’s system, it’s certainly showing up for a lot of people. Well, at least two of us… Note that you don’t have to sign into your AT&T online account info page

TUAW Talkcast tonight at 10pm Eastern

Posted by MacMan on March 21, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: Podcasts Our trademark talkcast goes on the air once again this evening at 10pm Eastern, and it’s going to be a heck of a show. We’re right in the middle of the runup to the iPad, so we’ll be talking about Apple’s rumored scramble for content deals, those test units hidden in the wild, and the doors opening up for app submissions on the App Store. And “iPad” isn’t the only word on the street — Apple has chosen to ban protective screens for some reason, 10.6.3 could be sneaking out this week, and we’ve even got new hardware rumors (but then again, don’t we always?). It’s sure to be a good time full of discussion about the biggest Apple stories of the past week

Slate comes to the iPhone, along with a lot of advertising

Posted by on March 9, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: Multimedia , Odds and ends , iPhone , iPod touch , App Review I’ve always liked Slate Magazine on the web. It’s sometimes sassy and irreverent, but always interesting — an eclectic mix of politics, culture and tech news. Now, Slate has come to the iPhone in a US$1.99 app that features all the articles from the site, as well as the blog posts, staff tweets and streaming video from the Slate podcasts.

GDC 2010: Ngmoco explains how Eliminate was built

Posted by on March 9, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: Gaming , Software , Other Events , Developer , iPhone The 2010 Game Developers Conference kicks off today in San Francisco, and TUAW is in attendance to check out the latest and greatest in iPhone game development. The conference boasts a whole track dedicated to iPhone gaming this year, and all week long, we’ll be bringing you panels, news, and interviews straight from the conference floor. This morning, panel number one was from Stephen Detwiler and James Marr, two engineers at Ngmoco, to talk to developers about how they put the server software together for Eliminate, the “freemium” first person shooter that’s serving as their flagship app lately. As they explained during the presentation, they had a heck of a goal with this project: they wanted to put together “the definitive FPS for iPhone,” complete with all of the functions of a standard console deathmatch-style FPS, in just five months with just three engineers. And they started with the toughest nut of all: the networking code. They looked first at commercial solutions for game networking, and it turns out that the Quake 3 engine that they eventually used fit their ideas well. The toughest obstacle was of course the lag — in a fast-paced game like Eliminate, even a delay of 200 milliseconds is too much
