msmtp, a free tool to send email from Terminal

Posted by MacMan on May 4, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: UNIX / BSD I fully expected that my article on mailsend would lead to several “Why don’t you use use XYZ instead?” replies, and it did. Suggestions included Ruby, Python, iPhone push notifications, and configuring postfix/sendmail. But one suggestion was to use msmtp , and that turned out to be the golden nugget. What makes msmtp so great, especially compared to mailsend, is that it completely eliminates the need to store your Gmail password in a plain text file on your computer. msmtp uses the Mac OS X Keychain instead. The other big advantage is that mailsend required several command line arguments every time, which makes it very likely that someone (i.e.

Average iPad app price is $1 more than iPhone apps

Posted by on May 4, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: iPad Here’s some more interesting stats about app pricing. We’ve heard pricing average stats before, including that the average app price seems to be hovering right around three dollars . But a firm in the Netherlands has done some more research into current iPad and iPhone app prices, and discovered that while iPhone apps average out at $3.87 (slightly higher than most estimates, but still in that $3 range), iPad apps are actually hitting an average of $4.67, almost a dollar more than iPhone versions. That’s both good and bad news for developers — while it does mean that iPad apps are releasing and selling at higher prices (something most developers believe should be the case , given the amount of work and design that goes into iPad apps versus their smaller-screen cousins), those prices aren’t that much higher

Sikuli can automate any UI by taking screenshots

Posted by on February 1, 2010 in Apple news

Filed under: OS , Software , Freeware This is pretty impressive –of course there are already lots of ways to automate actions on your Mac, and odds are that you may have messed around with scripting or Automator more than once before. But Sikuli is a new app that makes automating as simple as taking screenshots. Instead of programming actions, all you have to do is put screenshots of the particular UI items that you want to automate in a list, and then the app will use visual cues to do whatever you want it to do. Not only does it make things much easier when actually writing scripts, but it also gives you countless options in terms of automation — the app can automate any app that has a graphical user interface, because all it has to do is recognize that GUI on your screen. That includes web apps, too — like I said, the possibilities are endless.

Boxee Continues To Innovate With API And New Alpha Version For Mac, Apple TV (TechCrunch)

Posted by on April 7, 2009 in Apple news

Free entertainment hub Boxee keeps on getting better and better. A couple of hours ago, the venture-backed startup released a full API that allows developers to build applications for the open-source platform using a set of API calls in Python and writing the GUI using XML. At the same time, the company is laying the groundwork for a richer App Box, which it refers to as an open application …

Boxee Looks to Kill ‘Em with Content

Posted by on March 24, 2009 in Apple intelligence

Nearly 900 people RSVPd for the boxee meetup Tuesday at Webster Hall in NYC, where the “bleeding edge” media center platform is announcing brand new partnerships with Pandora, Radio Time and PBS, as well as a more robust API and a new XUL-based framework for the boxee browser that will enable easier interaction with any web-based video (translation: Hulu web pages). Live video of the meetup and a chat session are accessible on the Mogulus boxee meetup channel . With the new Pandora station, boxee users can listen to their personal quickmix and favorite stations, as well as create new stations, making music in the living room more accessible than ever. BoxeeHQ is also releasing a new PBS app today, and the company promises its new API will allow developers to build apps using XML pages and Python scripts, giving them control over everything they want from a UI perspective. They offer as an example the new implementation of Radio Time, an application built using the new API that will allow users to stream over 100k terrestrial radio stations from around the world

Plex Media Server beta adds plugin architecture

Posted by on February 23, 2009 in Apple news

Filed under: Video , Internet Tools , Beta Beat As we’ve noted before Plex (formerly OSXBMC) is the open-source media center application derived from XBMC (as was Boxee ). They’ve recently announced the release of version 0.78beta adding an interesting new feature: the Plex App Store. The Plex App Store (which actually doesn’t seem to be a store per se, at least not yet) is an online repository of plugins for Plex which allow users to add content from a variety of online streaming sources including, you guessed it, Hulu (which was working at least as of this writing). Apparently the framework for writing these plugins is in Python and “provides an easy, XML-based method to display Flash or Silverlight content to Plex.” The plugins themselves are relatively easy to write, with many requiring only “20-40 lines” of code.
